...who would you save?

Please note, this is not the hypothetical sinking ship in question.
As far as I'm aware, this is a totally seaworthy ship.

This month's 'Would You Rather?' dilemma features a hypothetical situation involving a sinking ship and four potential survivors.  Luckily, as the ship sinks you manage to jump into the lifeboat and are about to start rowing for the shore when you notice four people left behind on the sinking ship.

The remaining passengers are a doctor, a mother with a small child (the child isn't on the boat, but obviously the mother would like to be reunited with her child), the star player of your favourite football team, and your favourite musician.  Unfortunately, there's only enough room in the lifeboat for one more person, and as much as you'd like to squeeze in all four passengers, any extra weight would definitely cause the lifeboat to sink.

You can therefore only save one of the passengers.  The question is, who would you save?


Obviously, this week's scenario is totally unrealistic, and any clever creative readers can probably think of a number of other solutions which would save the lives of all the passengers, but that's not what the dilemma is about.  The point of the dilemma is if you could only save one life, who would you save?

commercially and critically successful, like James Bond or E.T. for
example, but if you could only have one, which would you choose?

The Academy Awards take place in a few days' time, so in honour of the Oscars, this week's 'Would You Rather?' has an acting theme to it.

Imagine youself as an up-and-coming actor or actress, and have a think about the following dilemma...

As an up-and-coming actor or actress, would you rather be paid a million pounds to star in a movie which was a commercial success, but which was universally panned and regarded as a turkey, or would you rather be paid a modest sum of money to star in a movie which was critically acclaimed and for which you went on to win an Oscar?

So in a nutshell it's a choice between money or critical acclaim.

This week's 'Would You Rather?' dilemma has a time travel theme to it, but try not to base your decision purely on whether you'd like to travel into the past or into the future.  The key part of the dilemma is whether you'd prefer to meet your ancestors or meet your decendants.

And whichever option you go for, you could also choose whether to reveal to your ancestors/descendants that you were their descendant/ancestor, or whether to keep that information a secret.

Two birthdays, or two Christmases?

If you opt for the 'two birthdays' option, then don't worry ... you wouldn't age twice as fast!  You would just get two days of the year where you got to go out and celebrate, and where everyone gave you cards and presents.

And if you opt for the 'two Christmases' option then obviously you get two days of the year where you get to give and receive presents to/from all your friends, and where you get to enjoy all of the other Christmas trimmings, such as meeting up with friends and family, Christmas food, and repeats on TV, er ... a chance to rewatch Christmas specials on TV!




Footnote: Whatever your choice, assume that the two days would be six months apart, so you get to spread out the enjoyment.

If you're quite sporty and athletic then it might be quite appealing not to age from the neck down, and therefore retain all your fitness ability.  However, from a vanity point of view it would be nice to have a face which never aged and never got wrinkly.

But if you could only have one then which one would it be?  A body which never aged from the neck down, or a face which never aged from the neck up?

Unless it's faced with this week's 'Would You Rather?' dilemma.

For most people, this week's dilemma might be seen as a choice between two equally undesirable options.  Or perhaps, some people might wish to selectively lose some of their memories.

However, if you had to go for a full memory wipe, and erase either all memories of the past, or all potential memories you would experience in future, which option would you go for?  To lose all your current memories?  Or to never be able to form new memories?

...or walk around all day with a sign on your back saying 'I haven't brushed my teeth for five days!'?

This week we feature quite a silly dilemma on the 'Would You Rather?' blog, as you have to choose between two embarassing scenarios.

You can either walk around all day with loads of chocolate smeared around your lips (think Alan Partridge in the chocolate mousse scene), or you can walk around with a sign on your back declaring to the world the poor state of your oral hygiene.

So those are the two options.  Which one would you go for?


And to clarify things, if you choose the 'I haven't brushed my teeth for five days' sign there would be no obligation to follow what it says.  You could still brush your teeth as often as you liked, and any discomfort would purely come from people seeing the sign and presuming that you had extremely poor dental hygiene.  Well, either that or perhaps more likely they'd assume you'd been the victim of a prank.

How much is enough?

Would you rather win a guaranteed £100,000,
 or have a fifty fifty chance of winning
a million pounds on the spin of a coin?

This week's dilemma is a test of greed, and offers a choice between taking a gamble, or playing it safe.  Here's the scenario...

You're waiting for the bus one day when an eccentric billionaire approaches you and offers you £100,000.  He opens his briefcase containing the cash, so you can see the offer is genuine.

However, he then offers you a gamble...  You can either take the £100,000 there and then, and the money will be yours to keep, or you can risk it all on the spin of a coin for the chance of even more cash.  If you guess heads or tails correctly, the eccentric billionaire will instead give you a million pounds!  However, if you guess wrong then you lose everything and walk away with nothing.  Not even your bus fare home!

So that's the dilemma.  What would you do?  Would you take the £100,000, or would you risk it all on the spin of a coin for the chance of a million pounds?

...or play every instrument in the world?

Languages and musical instruments are the themes of this month's dilemma.

This month's 'Would You Rather?' dilemma offers you the chance to gain new talents, and whichever choice you go for, you would instantly become a total expert at your chosen ability.  So you would either become perfectly fluent in every language, or you would be a world class musician at every instrument.

As it happens, I'm already totally amazing at every instrument* so I'd probably go for the 'fluent in all languages' option, but what about less musically talented people?  Which option would you go for?

And to clarify, you can't do both.  This month's 'Would You Rather?' dilemma is a straight choice; either relive the best day of your life, or relive a day of mistakes and correct those mistakes.
